"Fine" Isn't Always Fine - What lies beneath? (A metafloor)
When asked how they're doing, many people respond with a simple, "I'm fine." However, this response often masks deeper feelings and hides what is really going on. It's important to recognise that "fine" isn't always fine. It is OK to express our true emotions. By showing vulnerability and sharing struggles, we can find solace in the understanding and support of others.
What is really going on underneath?
Sometimes we need to strip it all back in order to find out what is really going on and start to rebuild our true potential.
I was recently asked to help fix a floor which had been broken for over 30 years. We had heard rumours about what lay beneath, but were not prepared for what we uncovered. As we removed the old floor, we unearthed the truth behind the legend. We uncovered a trench which had been dug by my father-in-law, beneath the old floor – he had spent weeks after work, crawling down a hole in the dining room and digging to install the central heating system. The trench went below the water table and appeared to be more like a stream. The evidence of an old pick axe and several old tea lights brought tears of admiration from his daughters who were seeing this trench for the first time.
We filled in the trench, replaced the rotten floor joists and strengthened the supporting walls. Once we had started, we felt compelled to finish and ended up laying new floorboards… and then laying laminate flooring through both rooms.
It was quite an achievement and gave us an amazing sense of accomplishment. It is great to be able to remove the surface and find out what is really going on underneath. Being able to help repair the problem or transform the situation is a privilege.
